Summer is a great time of year to get outside and enjoy Mother Nature, for obvious reasons. One of the most popular summer activities, especially here in Junction City near the Trinity Alps Wilderness, is hiking!
If you’re not a seasoned hiker, you may think hiking in the summer is fairly easy compared to the rest of the year, because of the long daylight hours and nice weather. But experienced trekkers know that the summer heat can be an obstacle, or even downright dangerous. As long as you take the right precautions though, i.e., the ones listed below, you’ll be able to enjoy your summer hike in the Trinity Alps despite the heat!
Head out early.
Summer temperatures tend to peak between 11am and 2pm. Getting an early start will allow you to get most of your elevation done in the cooler morning temperatures, saving you a lot of energy and sweat. As an added bonus, the 6am trail crowds tend to be much smaller, so you’ll have more space to pace yourself.
Dress smart.
The right clothing is crucial to a safe and comfortable summer hike. You might be surprised to learn that long sleeves and pants are actually your best option, as they provide more skin coverage for protection from the sun, vegetation, and insects. Whatever you wear, make sure it’s loose, lightweight, and moisture-wicking to keep you cool. You’ll also want a pair of breathable hiking boots and a few extra pairs of socks to sweat through.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Replacing the water your body is sweating out is crucial for any physical activity, especially in the summer. Pack more water than you think you’ll need, and remember to sip regularly throughout your hike. If you wait to drink until you feel thirsty, then you’re already dehydrated. Pair your water with energizing snacks that contain electrolytes, such as protein bars, trail mix, and starchy fruits like apples.
Don’t forget sun protection.
The sun isn’t just draining, it can also be damaging too. When hiking in the summer, be sure to apply sunscreen every 1-1.5 hours, even in cloudy conditions. This is especially important when you’re hiking in high altitudes, where the sun’s UV rays are more potent. Wearing a hat or visor and sunglasses can offer additional protection as well.
